What is a Dental Appliance?
Maintaining good oral health is more than just brushing and flossing. For those of us who play sports, who clench or grind our teeth or who snore, dental appliances can help preserve and protect our oral structures, and the health of our whole bodies.
The dental appliances offered at our Halifax dental office—like sports and nighttime mouth guards—can be used to improve and protect the health of your teeth, gums and entire oral cavity.
Custom-Fitted Mouth Guards
We offer custom-made mouth guards that fit over your teeth to protect them from damage.
Sports Guards
If you get hit in the mouth during a sports activity, a mouth guard provides a barrier between your teeth and the soft tissue of your mouth to protect your smile. It serves as a buffer, evenly distributing force to protect your smile.
One-size-fits-all mouth guards are pretty widely available, but won't be fitted to the exact shape of your teeth. Dentists can craft custom sports guards to encourage comfort and safety.
Night Guards
If you grind your teeth during sleep, a mouth guard will help protect your teeth from damage. If you clench your jaw, a mouth guard will also help prevent you from clenching and provide some pain relief.
Mouth guards can last between 2 - 10 years, but the severity of your grinding can impact their longevity. Dental procedures that change your teeth may affect the fit of your night guard too, requiring an adjustment or replacement.
